Which day trip suits you?

A quick way to choose. For most families, one bigger outing every second day is plenty.

• Families with small children: Fethiye harbour, a market morning, Ölüdeniz and the Blue Lagoon's calm shallow water, and a relaxed boat trip with shade.
• Couples: Kayaköy at golden hour, a quieter boat day, Göcek, and Butterfly Valley by boat.
• Active travellers: Babadağ paragliding, the Kayaköy–Ölüdeniz walking path, and wading deep into Saklıkent Gorge.
• History lovers: Kayaköy, the Tlos ruins, and the UNESCO-listed Xanthos and Letoon.
• Hot July and August days: Saklıkent's cold water or a full day on the sea.

Easy half-days close to Çalış

Fethiye harbour and old town

This is the easiest first day out. Use it for a harbour walk, casual lunch, boat-trip enquiries and a feel for the town. It pairs well with a slower evening back in Çalış. Dolmuş minibuses and taxis take about 15 minutes from Çalış. Look up at the Lycian rock tombs above town, wander the old Paspatur lanes and browse the fish market.

Local market morning

Çalış has its own Sunday market right by the beach, and Fethiye's bigger Tuesday market is about 15 minutes away. A market morning is useful for fruit, snacks, simple apartment meals and seeing everyday local life. Go early, before the heat, and bring a shopping bag.

Kayaköy history walk

Kayaköy is best treated as a separate half-day rather than squeezed between beach stops. The drive from Çalış takes about 20–25 minutes. The hillside of abandoned stone houses and churches was left empty after the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes and choose cooler hours when possible — late-afternoon light suits couples. Paths are uneven, so skip the pushchair.

Ölüdeniz, the Blue Lagoon and Babadağ

Ölüdeniz is one of the most famous Fethiye-area day trips. It is roughly 30–35 minutes away by car or dolmuş. Go early in peak season, expect it to be busy and check dolmuş return times if you are not driving.

The Blue Lagoon is a protected nature park with calm, shallow water — one of the best swimming spots in the area for small children. The long main beach next to it is livelier, with cafés and water sports. Above it rises Babadağ, famous for tandem paragliding that lands on the beach. Flights depend on the wind, so book with a licensed operator and keep the day flexible.

Butterfly Valley by boat

Butterfly Valley is a steep-sided bay along the coast from Ölüdeniz, best reached by the boats that run from Ölüdeniz beach in season, with a small beach and a short walk to a waterfall. The cliff path is steep and not for families. Check the last return boat.

Walking from Kayaköy to Ölüdeniz

A marked walking path climbs from Kayaköy over the hill and down to Ölüdeniz. Do it in spring or autumn, start early, carry plenty of water and return by dolmuş or taxi.

Boat trip day

A boat trip is a full-day rhythm: arrive, swim, eat, relax and return. Before booking, ask about route, number of swim stops, food, shade and whether the boat has a quiet or party-style atmosphere. Most boats leave from Fethiye harbour, about 15 minutes away; in season some operators also pick up along the Çalış waterfront.

The classic choice is the 12 Islands trip around the bays and islands of Fethiye Gulf, with several swim stops. Families should ask about children's life jackets and shade. Couples wanting something calmer can try Göcek, a small marina town west of Fethiye with sheltered bays and a relaxed waterfront.

Saklıkent Gorge, Tlos and Yaka Park

Saklıkent is a deep canyon about an hour's drive from Çalış (roughly 45–50 km). You can walk into the gorge on wooden platforms and wade in cold mountain water, so it is a refreshing choice on the hottest days. Go early, bring water shoes and expect company in peak season. The stones are slippery and the current at the entrance can be strong, so hold children's hands.

Nearby are the ruins of Tlos, an ancient Lycian city with rock tombs, a theatre and wide mountain views, and the Yaka Park area, known for shady trout restaurants beside running water — a full day for families with older children. A car gives the most freedom; organised tours are the easy alternative.

Longer days: Dalyan, Xanthos, Letoon and Patara

These are further away: plan full days, start early or join an organised tour.

Dalyan

Dalyan is known for river boats that pass the ancient rock tombs of Kaunos, the mud baths and İztuzu, the turtle beach where loggerhead turtles nest. Many tours from Fethiye cover the highlights in one day.

Xanthos, Letoon and Patara

Xanthos and Letoon are a joint UNESCO World Heritage Site and the heart of ancient Lycia. They pair naturally with Patara, a long sandy beach backed by dunes and the ancient city's remains — also a turtle nesting beach, so follow local rules.

No-plan Çalış day

1. Day 1: Arrive, settle in, sunset on Çalış promenade.
2. Day 2: Fethiye harbour and old town; ask about boat trips.
3. Day 3: Ölüdeniz and the Blue Lagoon, early start; paragliding if you want it.
4. Day 4: No-plan day: pool, beach, apartment lunch.
5. Day 5: Full-day boat trip from Fethiye harbour.
6. Day 6: Saklıkent Gorge, with Tlos or Yaka Park if energy allows.
7. Day 7: Market morning, then Kayaköy in the late afternoon.

Seasonal tips

July and August

It is hot. Go out early, rest at midday and head out again in the late afternoon. Choose water-based days — the sea, the lagoon, Saklıkent — and leave walks and ruins for cooler hours.

Spring and autumn

May, June, September and October suit walks, ruins and longer drives, and the sea is often still warm in autumn. Seasonal boats may run less often, so confirm first.

Getting around

Dolmuş minibuses and taxis cover Fethiye and Ölüdeniz. A hire car makes Saklıkent, Tlos and Göcek simpler, organised tours suit Dalyan and the Lycian sites, and boats cover the 12 Islands and Butterfly Valley. Always check current times locally.
