Choose a base before choosing activities

With children or mixed-age groups, the base matters as much as the itinerary. A practical apartment lets you reset between beach time, boat trips and town visits without needing every meal or pause to happen outside.

Çalış suits this well. It is one of the flatter parts of Fethiye, so pushchairs, scooters and tired little legs cope far better than on the hillier streets elsewhere. What the apartment offers families

Before booking any family stay, confirm sleeping layout, beds, bathroom count, stairs or lift access, air conditioning, washing machine and Wi-Fi. At Calis Sunstay the answers are simple:

• A master bedroom with a double bed and en-suite bathroom; a second bedroom with a double and a single bed and its own en-suite; and a sofa-bed room by written agreement.
• Three bathrooms in total, which makes busy mornings and after-beach showers much easier.

Getting there from Dalaman Airport

Dalaman Airport (DLM) is roughly 45 km from Çalış, usually 40–50 minutes by car depending on traffic. With children and luggage, a pre-arranged private transfer is the simplest option; shuttle buses run to Fethiye, from where a local dolmuş or taxi covers the last stretch. Ask about transfer help when you send your dates.

Travelling with babies or young children? Confirm child seats or booster seats in advance, whether you arrange a transfer or hire a car, and do not assume they are included.

Heat, sun and pool safety

Fethiye summer days can be hot, so beach and pool time is often easiest earlier or later in the day. Keep the middle of the day flexible for food, shade or a break.

Sun sense for children

In July and August, treat the hours around midday as indoor or shade time: lunch, a nap, a film or a board game in the air-conditioned apartment. Use high-factor sunscreen and reapply after swimming, add sun hats and UV swim tops, and keep water bottles topped up.

Around the pool

The complex has a shared pool and a children's pool, and the house rules are clear: children must be supervised around the pool. Agree on one adult "pool watcher" at a time, keep glass away from the pool area and bring armbands or a float suit for younger swimmers.

Promenade walks and cycling

The flat seafront promenade is ideal for an early-evening stroll, a scooter ride or an ice cream while the sun sets over the bay. Bikes can be hired locally, and the promenade is a relaxed place for confident young cyclists. Ask for helmets.

Water taxi to Fethiye harbour

In season, small water taxis cross the bay between Çalış and Fethiye harbour. For children it feels like a mini boat trip, and it is an easy way to reach the harbour and the town centre without driving or parking. Check the day's departures locally.

Ölüdeniz lagoon

The Ölüdeniz lagoon is sheltered and usually calm, with shallow water near the shore, which makes it one of the easiest swimming spots in the area for younger children. Go early in summer to find shade and space, and take water shoes for the pebbles.

Gentle boat trips

Day boats from Fethiye harbour visit bays and islands along the coast. With children, ask for a quiet family boat rather than a party boat, check there is enough shade on deck and confirm that life jackets in children's sizes are on board.

Saklıkent Gorge with older children

Saklıkent is a real adventure for school-age children and teenagers who enjoy wading. The river water is very cold even in midsummer and the rocks can be slippery, so bring water shoes, a towel and dry clothes. It is less suitable for toddlers. Our day trips from Çalış guide has more ideas.

One boat day, one town/harbour day, one Ölüdeniz day and one fully local Çalış day is a good starting rhythm. Add more only if the group still has energy. Within each day, these patterns tend to work well:

With toddlers and young children

• Morning: breakfast on the balcony, then the children's pool or Çalış Beach while it is cooler.
• Midday: lunch at the apartment and a nap in the air conditioning.
• Late afternoon: another short swim.
• Evening: an early dinner nearby and a sunset stroll along the promenade.

With older children and teens

• Morning: an early start for Ölüdeniz, a boat trip or Saklıkent.
• Midday: shade, lunch and a rest rather than more sightseeing.
• Late afternoon: pool time back at the complex.
• Evening: the water taxi to Fethiye harbour or a bike ride along the seafront.

Seasonal tips

Late spring and early summer: warm days and fewer crowds. The sea is still warming up, so younger children may find it fresh at first, and evenings can be cool enough for a light layer.

July and August: the hottest and busiest weeks. Plan outings for the morning, rest at midday, and arrange transfers and boat trips well ahead.

September and October: the sea is still warm from the summer, the heat eases and the pace is calmer: ideal for families with pre-school children.

Shops, pharmacies and everyday needs

Çalış has supermarkets, bakeries, greengrocers and a Sunday market, so baby essentials, fruit and snacks are always within easy reach. Pharmacies (eczane) are easy to find, and pharmacists can advise on minor problems such as sunburn, insect bites or an upset stomach; outside normal hours, a duty pharmacy (nöbetçi eczane) is signposted.
